Preparation
All substrates must be level, cured, undamaged, compact, rigid, resistant, dry and free from any debonding agents and from damp rising. It is good practice to dampen highly absorbent concrete substrates or apply a coat of Keratrade or Kerakoll porous primer. Most non-porous surfaces may be primed with Keratrade or Kerakoll Non-porous Primer.
Application
To guarantee maximum adhesion it is necessary to apply a layer of adhesive sufficient to cover the entire back of the coating material. Check samples to make sure the adhesive has been transferred to the back of the material. Use a 6mm notch for tiles up to 150x150mm, a 10mm notch for up to 250x250mm and a 12mm notch for 300x300mm tiles. Tiles400x400mm and larger should be back-buttered in addition to using a12mm notched trowel Press tiles firmly into adhesive before it skins Apply only up to 1m² at a time to avoid skinning If skinned, re-spread to expose "wet" adhesive Check that enough of the substrate and tile back are in contact with adhesive (usually at least 80% but higher for large format tiles).
Discard any material that has hardened before use
Allow adhesive to harden adequately before grouting. The open time for Keratiel S1 is at least 60 minutes under normal temperature and humidity conditions. When environmental conditions are not ideal (direct sunlight, dry wind, high temperatures), or if the substrate is particularly absorbent, open time may be reduced to only a few minutes. Therefore, check constantly the adhesive to make sure a layer of dry skin does not form on its surface, and that it is still fresh. If a layer of dry skin forms, run the notched trowel over the adhesive again to re-activate open time, or, if the adhesive has already start to set, remove it and spread a new layer of fresh adhesive.
