Sheet Membranes Buyer's Guide — TradieCart
Sheet membranes deliver factory-controlled thickness and instant coverage for waterproofing, anti-fracture, and decoupling applications. TradieCart stocks self-adhesive, torch-on, weldable, and bentonite sheet membranes from Gripset, Ardex, Tremco, Wedi, Cetco, Sika, and more — covering everything from bathroom floors to below-ground tanking and exposed roofing.
Understanding Sheet Membrane Types
- Butyl rubber (self-adhesive) — Peel-and-stick, flexible from -30°C to +80°C, primer-less on most surfaces. For wet areas and below-ground. Brands: Gripset, Durotech.
- SBS modified bitumen — Flexible in cold temperatures, self-adhesive or torch-on. Not UV-stable — must be covered. Brands: Ardex (WPM 117, 3000X, 188).
- APP modified bitumen — Heat and UV resistant, torch-applied. For exposed roofing, balconies, and external use. Brands: Ardex (WPM 150, 185, 444), Tremco.
- PVC — Chemical-resistant, hot-air welded seams. For commercial roofing. Brand: Tremco (Tremply PVC).
- Bentonite composite — Swelling clay that self-seals around penetrations. For below-grade against hydrostatic pressure. Brands: Cetco, Tremco.
- PE/PP sheet — Lightweight membranes for undertile waterproofing, uncoupling, and anti-fracture. Brands: Wedi, Ardex, Kerakoll.
Popular Products
| Product | Best For |
|---|---|
| Durotech Durosheet BFM | Cost-effective self-adhesive butyl membrane with fleece face for direct tiling. No dry time, anti-fracture properties, and no hazardous primers. The budget-friendly pick for bathroom and shower waterproofing. |
| Gripset BRW PFN | Established self-adhesive butyl rubber with fabric face for direct tiling. Primer-less on most surfaces. A well-known alternative for wet area waterproofing. |

| Tremco TREMproof 560A | Cost-effective self-adhesive SBS bitumen membrane designed specifically for below-grade waterproofing. Cold-applied — no torching needed. Chemical resistant to ground water and soil. The go-to for retaining walls and foundations. |
| Gripset BRW HD | HDPE-reinforced butyl rubber for below-ground waterproofing. Requires unbonded screed — not tile-ready. For retaining walls, basements, and foundations. |
| Wedi Subliner Dry | Tear-resistant PE sheet with fleece for undertile waterproofing. Crack-bridging, underfloor heating compatible. Available in 5 m and 30 m rolls. |
| Ardex WPM 1000 & WPM 750 | Weldable undertile membranes — WPM 1000 for internal and external use (60-min flood test ready); WPM 750 is the cost-effective internal-only option. |
| Ardex Butynol | Synthetic rubber single-ply for exposed roofing, ponding areas, and potable water tanks. AS 4020 and AS 4654.1 compliant. In 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm. |
| Self-Adhesive Bituminous (Ardex WPM 117, 3000X) | Cold-applied SBS peel-and-stick — no naked flames. WPM 117 (2 mm) for general use; WPM 3000X (1.5 mm) adds HDPE film for chemical resistance. |
| Torch-On Membranes (Ardex WPM 150/185/444, Tremco Torch range) | APP and SBS bituminous for roofing, balconies, and podiums. WPM 185 has mineral-coated UV finish; Tremco Torch 4000M is the premium cap sheet. |
| Below-Grade Membranes (Tremco Paraseal LG, Cetco Voltex range) | Bentonite and composite membranes for foundations and split-slab. Self-sealing around penetrations. Saltwater Paraseal LG for saline conditions. |
| Uncoupling & Anti-Fracture (Ardex UI 740, Kerakoll AquaStop Green) | Decoupling membranes that absorb substrate movement to prevent tile cracking. Suited for tiling over existing tiles or substrates prone to movement. |
Quick Recommendation Guide
- Bathroom or shower floor (tiling over) → Durotech Durosheet BFM — cost-effective self-adhesive butyl with fleece face, tile-ready with no dry time. Gripset BRW PFN is also a solid alternative
- Undertile waterproofing with underfloor heating → Wedi Subliner Dry — fleece-backed, heating compatible
- Below-ground retaining wall or basement → Tremco TREMproof 560A — purpose-built for below-grade, cold-applied, chemical resistant. Gripset BRW HD and Tremco Paraseal LG for hydrostatic pressure applications
- Exposed flat roof or ponding area → Ardex Butynol 1.5 mm or torch-on cap sheet (WPM 185 / Tremco Torch 4000M)
- Balcony or external deck → Ardex WPM 1000 (weldable) or torch-on system (WPM 150 + WPM 185)
- Balcony with tiles → Durotech Durosheet BFM — cost-effective butyl membrane suited for internal and external areas with direct tiling. Ardex WPM 1000 is the premium alternative — weldable with 60-minute flood test readiness
- No-flame site (fire-sensitive) → Ardex WPM 117 or WPM 3000X — SBS peel-and-stick
- Renovation over cracked substrate → Gripset XpressLay — anti-fracture, waterproof, and decoupling in one
Common Questions
Sheet membrane vs liquid membrane — when should I use each? — Sheet membranes give factory-controlled, consistent thickness and instant coverage on large flat areas. Liquid membranes suit intricate details, penetrations, and small spaces. Many waterproofers use a hybrid approach — sheet on the floor, liquid at perimeters and around pipes.
What do membrane Classes I, II, and III mean? — Under AS/NZS 4858, membranes are classified by elongation at break. Class III (300%+) is the most flexible and commonly specified for internal wet areas — it needs only 12 mm bond breakers at junctions. Class I (10–59%) is stiffer, suited to exposed roofing.
Can I tile directly over a sheet membrane? — Only fabric or fleece-faced membranes. Durotech Durosheet BFM, Gripset BRW PFN, and Wedi Subliner Dry accept tile adhesive directly. Smooth-faced membranes (BRW HD, PVC) need an unbonded screed first.
BRW PFN vs XpressLay — which one? — BRW PFN is a dedicated waterproofing membrane for wet areas. XpressLay adds decoupling and anti-fracture — better for renovations or substrates prone to movement. For standard wet area waterproofing, BRW PFN is the go-to.
Durotech BFM vs Gripset BRW PFN — which one? — Both are self-adhesive butyl membranes with a fabric/fleece face for direct tiling. Durotech BFM is the more cost-effective option with added anti-fracture properties and zero dry time. BRW PFN is the established industry name. Either will do the job — BFM gives you the same performance for less.
Do I need a primer under sheet membrane? — Butyl rubber membranes (Gripset BRW range, Durotech BFM) are primer-less on most surfaces including metal, plastic, and glazed substrates. Bituminous membranes typically need a bitumen-based primer. Always check the product TDS.
