Understanding Grout Classifications (AS ISO 13007)
Every grout bag displays an AS ISO 13007 classification code. Here's what the letters mean:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| CG1 | Normal cementitious grout |
| CG2 | Improved cementitious grout (higher performance) |
| A | High abrasion resistance |
| W | Reduced water absorption |
| F | Fast-setting |
| RG | Reaction resin grout (epoxy) |
For example, CG2WA means an improved cementitious grout with reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance — the standard for quality tile grout. RG indicates epoxy grout that requires no sealing.

Common Questions
What's the difference between cementitious and epoxy grout? — Cementitious grout is affordable and easy to apply but porous — it needs sealing and can stain over time. Epoxy grout (RG) costs more but is waterproof, stain-proof and never needs sealing. Choose epoxy for pools, commercial areas and anywhere low maintenance matters.
Which grout do I need for a swimming pool? — Always use epoxy grout (RG rated). Mapei Kerapoxy Easy Design is the most popular choice for its easy application. Ardex EG15 and Laticrete SpectraLock Pro are also excellent pool grouts.
Should I use Ardex FG8 or FS-DD? — FG8 is the everyday grout for joints 1–8mm on most tile types. FS-DD is the better choice for fine joints (1–4mm) on polished porcelain, rectified tiles and mosaics — its unsanded formula won't scratch delicate surfaces.
Do I need to seal my grout? — Cementitious grout should be sealed within 48–72 hours of curing and resealed every 6–12 months. Epoxy grout never needs sealing — a major time and cost saving over the life of the installation.
What grout width should I use? — 1.5mm minimum for wall tiles, 3mm is the standard for most jobs, and 5mm+ for large format tiles (600mm and above). Always check the grout manufacturer's recommended joint width range.
Ardex WJ 50 or Laticrete Wide Joint XL for outdoor pavers? — Both are designed for wide joints on outdoor pavers and crazy paving. WJ 50 handles joints up to 50mm and has anti-efflorescence additives. Wide Joint XL is a flexible alternative. Choose based on joint width and your preferred brand.
